FROSIO NEXT, not only hydropower plants: construction of a revetment wall in the riverbed of Mella river
by Beatrice Baratti and Caterina Frosio
April 2021
FROSIO NEXT carried out the design and the construction of a revetment wall in the riverbed of the Mella river in order to protect the foundations of some buildings in Gardone Val Trompia (BS).
Overview of the project
The project focused on the foundations’ walls of some industrial buildings, also acting as embankment walls, located in the right bank of the Mella river. The embankment walls, characterized by a solid rock structure with good texture, however, was based on a foundation made by boulders bounded by irregular layers of mortar. The foundation of the embankment walls was protected by a revetment wall made by loose boulders, partially eroded over time by the floods of the Mella river and, in particular, by the flood occurred in October 2018.
Project description
The project led to the construction of a new revetment wall in order to restore the protection of the foundations. Due to the fact that the original revetment wall was partially damaged by the floods of Mella river, the new revetment wall has been built with boulders bounded by concrete in order to ensure a long-lasting solution.
The activities carried out by FROSIO NEXT
FROSIO NEXT followed all the project phases, from the design to the construction, deploying its high specialisation in the hydraulic engineering.
Turning challenges into opportunities
Despite just few sections of the riverbed needed a urgent intervention, FROSIO NEXT has decided to enlarge the project intervention area to all the riverbed interested by the presence of the buildings’ foundations in order to ensure an high level of protection and to improve the visual impact.
