We use several types of hydraulic engineering works:

  • Structures of loose material: they consist of loose lithoid elements of different granulometry, from stone castings to earthworks.
  • Rigid concrete or reinforced concrete structures
  • Semi-rigid structures: rigid prefabricated structures, connected on site to obtain structures with a certain degree of deformability.
  • Flexible structures: these are able to face considerable deformations and subsidence of the ground without breaking or losing their protective function.

The regime of watercourses and the nature of the crossed lands may not be in equilibrium conditions. That can cause erosion phenomena of the bank or of its foot, with sliding along sub-vertical walls.

The tendency of the riverbeds to assume sinuous shapes is caused by the different erodibility of the formations crossed; in general there is a relative stability of the planimetric inflection sections and a marked instability downstream of the vertices of the curves.

The gabion wire mesh is a permeable structure, flexible and resistant at the same time. It is able to withstand the deformations of the individual elements and the settlements and subsidence of the laying surface or of the ground back.
