The project

Frosio Next has been directly tasked with providing the preliminary and definitive design of the plant for the concession application and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) procedure, for the Single Authorization procedure, directly managing the technical aspects. The pumping plant, designed to meet the regulation needs of the national network, involves two reservoirs, one upstream and one downstream of the power station building, connected by galleries and underground pipes. The power station building, also in a cavern, houses 2 ternary pump groups with horizontal axis. The plant layout benefits from the existing Saetta reservoir (upstream Basin) while waterways and the downstream basin are designed from scratch. In the development process, particular attention has been given to the site selection, identified through meticulous screening of existing basins across Italian territory. The plant represents the state of the art in terms of technology for these applications, ensuring a swift transition from full generation mode to full pump mode within seconds.

To enable this, special attention has been devoted to the selection of electromechanical components and hydraulic verification under transient conditions of civil structures such as conduits and galleries. The specific plant layout, which envisages all works underground (with the exception of the two basins), allows for optimization of environmental and landscape impacts, rendering the site practically invisible.
